Infrastructure Business Unit
Doubling of track from Lodhran to Khanewal via Multan (121 Kms) Rs. 3297.520 million

This Project will result in increase of Line capacity of the  section. Work of Lodhran-Khanewal via Multan has been completed.

 
Doubling of Track from Khanewal to Raiwind (246 Kms)

The Project has been started during current financial year and will be completed within one year at the cost of Rs. 5712 I million.

 
Achievements During 2006·2007
VHF Communication has been commissioned on main line from Peshawar Cantt. to Karachi and important branch lines covering 500 stations. All locomotives have also been equipped with VHF Radio The HF Radio communication have been provided on Multan Shah-Kundian Section.
 
Future Plan
Pakistan Railways has planned to lay Optical Fiber Transmission System from Peshawar to Karachi on main line to replace existing old and obsolete analogue M.W.lUHF Radio System unserviceable underground cable between Lahore-Khanewal.
 
Railway Electrification

25 KV AC, Single phase, Electric Traction system was introduced  in 1970 over 286 Kms Lahore-Khanewal main line section to mod the system and also to save foreign exchange, on import off Diesel Locomotives. The anticipated benefits have been fully achieved. However, the system is now in run down condition and rehabilitation.
Pakistan Railways is providing a second line from Khan Raiwind, so as to provide double line all the way from Karachi to Lahore. The work is expected to be completed by 30th June, 2009. Electrification of the second line and Rehabilitation of existing electrified section also been programmed.
Ministry of Railways now intends to conduct fresh feasibility for Electrification V/S Dieselization for a certain viability of Electrification on Khanewal-Karachi double line section through International/National Consultants under Transport Assistance (TA) loan from ADB. Prequalification of six international firm from six countries has already been carried out and "Request For Proposals" (RFP's) has also been sent to ADB for approval  Phase-I of the study is expected to be completed within three months

 
Passenger Business Unit
117 Special trains were arranged on the demand of passengers on religious and festive occasions.
1057 Coaches have been attached to various trains to clear the extra rush of passengers in the year 2006-2007.
On Line Computerized Reservation System increased from 21 to 34 Railway Stations in the year 2006 - 2007.
 
Freight Business Unit
Achievements
  • Pakistan Railways loaded 320335 wagons up to 30-06-07 in the current financial year as compared to 298875 wagons of the corresponding period.

  • Pakistan Railways earned Rs. 5052.396 million in the current fiscal year as compared to 4770.021 million of the corresponding year i.e. RS.282.375 million more than last year.

  • Pakistan Railways introduced the daily. running of cargo Express in both up and down directions from 15-1-07 between Badami bagh and Karachi City. A total of 113 trains in round trip have been run thus earning revenue of . Rs. 158.2 million.

  • A similar cargo express Train consisting of conventional stock was started thrice in a week from Faisalabad via Khanewal to Karachi and vice versa on 17-4-2007. To date 30 trains have been run earning revenue of 24.6 million.

  • A non bonded container terminal started operating from Oct, 2006 at Moghalpura and Karachi. Till the end of current financial year 3953 TEUS were handled earning Rs. 37.29 million.
